In teaching His disciples to pray, the Lord said, “Let Your kingdom come”. (Matthew 6:9-13) This part of the prayer tells us that the Lord’s kingdom will come, but it also evokes in us a desire for His kingship. As Christians called to holiness in this fallen world, our hearts yearn for a life of justice and peace in the coming earthly kingdom of Christ. Jesus taught us to pour out that yearning in prayer. And when we pray like this, we can have clarity on what that kingdom will look like.
Nine Characteristics of the Kingdom
- Jesus’s kingdom will be earthly and it will be in Jerusalem. (Matthew 25:3; Isaiah 24:23; Jeremiah 3:17; Zechariah 14:6)
- Jesus’s kingdom will be political. (Isaiah 9:6-7; Isaiah 2:2-4; Zephaniah 3:19; Zechariah 12:10)
- Jesus’s kingdom will be global. (Psalm 72:8; Zechariah 14: 20-21)
